Two days before Whitney Houston’s death, The X Factor contestant Stacy Francis was allegedly involved in an argument with the singer. Speaking to Oprah, Houston’s sister gave her take on the altercation, saying it was verbal, not physical.
“There were words back and forth between [Whitney] and a young lady I believe was on The X Factor,” Patricia Houston said on Oprah’s Next Chapter, which aired Sunday. “[Francis] comes over, and she says hello, but you keep seeing her. Every corner that we go to, here she comes. Didn’t know her. She didn’t know her from Adam. I don’t know what the initial conversation was. I just know that it didn’t feel right”
Patricia Houston added that Francis appeared to have tears in her eyes, but said the argument did not escalate beyond that.
Francis had previously described the altercation as physical.
“She put her hand in my face. She was screaming at me and called me a bitch. She just went crazy – like Jekyll and Hyde,” Francis told the Daily Mirror last month. But she maintained Houston was an idol of hers.
“I grabbed her hand and said, ‘Please don’t do this. You’re everything to me. You’re my idol, you’re a legend,’” Francis said.
As Yahoo! points out, Francis told Access Hollywood a slightly different story a week later, saying there was nothing physical about the confrontation, and that Houston had even apologized to her.
According to American Idol season 8 semifinalist Nick Mitchell, Houston had met Francis before. In 1999, when Francis was an up-and-comer appearing in a Broadway production of Footloose, Houston brought her up on stage and introduced her as “a very successful singer from New York City who’s currently on Broadway,”
A source told THR last month that at the party where the incident occurred, Houston did not appear to recognize Francis when approached by her, but that Houston “was cordial.” The source said things got heated when R&B star Ray J stepped into the conversation to verbally defend Francis, whom was rumored to be his girlfriend.
