Every team that makes it to the Super Bowl traditionally has a fight song. In a first, fans of both the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Green Bay Packers will sing their fight songs to the same tune – that of Black and Yellow.
The song from the Pittsburgh-born rapper is currently the number 3 pop song in the country, according to Billboard magazine’s Hot 100 chart.
Fans of sports teams across the country have recorded their own versions and remixes of the song with the words that reflect the colors of their teams, the Journal said, highlighting that there are three versions about Green Bay called Green and Yellow.
The song isn’t explicitly about football and doesn’t include the words “Pittsburgh” or “Steelers” in its lyrics, the paper pointed out.
“I definitely wrote it with Pittsburgh pride in general,” Wiz Khalifa, whose real name is Cameron Jibril Thomaz , told the Journal. “In everything I do I want to represent my city. It just surprises me that people are even that interested in it.”
He also said he is flattered to be imitated. “That’s cool, just the fact that people want to grab onto it and represent it,” he told the Journal. “But as far as Black and Yellow goes, there’s only one, and everyone knows what I’m talking about.”
“I don’t think there’s ever been a song like this,” said Mikey Dougherty, host of a morning show on KISS-96.1, Pittsburgh’s main pop radio station, which has been playing the song in heavy rotation. “Every city is adopting their own version, and it’s almost like a challenge to do the best one.”
