British band The 1975 is set to perform at the mtvU Woodie Awards.
The Manchester-based foursome join previously announced performer Childish Gambino (aka Donald Glover) at the March 13 show during South by Southwest in Austin, Tex. The rock outfit will play on the MTV Artists Stage, sponsored by Pepsi.
Additionally, the mtvU will debut a new category at this year’s awards show: the Cover Woodie Award. The category recognizes artists who have covered popular songs and made it their own.
The 1975 is nominated for its take on One Direction’s “What Makes You Beautiful” and will compete for the prize against Bastille (Miley Cyrus‘ “We Can’t Stop”), Arctic Monkeys (Drake‘s “Hold On We’re Going Home”), Vampire Weekend (Robin Thicke‘s “Blurred Lines”), Sam Smith (Bruno Mars‘ “When I Was Your Man”) and Low (Rihanna‘s “Stay”). Fans can vote for their favorite via Twitter, Instagram and Vine through customized hashtags with “#vote” in front of the artist they are voting for.
“We love SXSW and The Woodies will be the party to be at,” said The 1975, also nominated for the emerging artists award, in a joint statement. “We cannot wait to get back to Austin!”
The 1975 released its self-titled album in September 2013, hitting No. 1 in the U.K. and in the top 30 in the U.S. Singles include “Settle Down,” “Chocolate” and “The City.”
MTV and mtvU will broadcast the 30-minute mtvU Woodie Awards special on Sunday, March 16, at 8 p.m. ET/PT. Voting is currently underway at Woodies.MTV.com. Arcade Fire leads the nominations.
