NATO appoints Gary Klein vp general counsel

Remit to include digital technology, windows, piracy, ratings

LOS ANGELES -- The National Association of Theatre Owners has appointed veteran trade association executive Gary Klein vp general counsel.

Based at NATO's Washington offices, Klein will provide legal and policy advice to the trade group and its board. Hot-button issues on which Klein is expected to focus include digital technology, distribution windows, movie piracy and film ratings.

"NATO is very fortunate to have the services of someone with the depth and breadth of legal and trade-association experience that Gary Klein brings to us," NATO chief John Fithian said Thursday. "The movie theater industry faces exciting and challenging opportunities, and we look forward to Gary's counsel in navigating them."

Klein formerly served as associate administrator of government policy in the U.S. General Services Administration. From 2003-06, he was senior vp general counsel for the Toy Industry Assn. and from 1997-2003 was vp general counsel for the Consumer Electronics Assn.
