NATPE: Corus Entertainment Bringing Univision to Canada

The existing TLN en Espanol channel will be rebranded to get the Hispanic network into the Canadian market as part of a licensing agreement with Univision Communications.

TORONTO – Univision is headed to Canada.

Canadian broadcaster Corus Entertainment has inked a deal to bring the Hispanic network north of the U.S. border. The licensing agreement with Univision Communications will see Toronto-based Corus rebrand its existing TLN en Espanol channel here as Univision Canada.

The deal builds on ties between Corus' Telelatino-branded cable channels that already air Univision series like Sabado Gigante, Premio Lo Nuestro, Feliz Ano, the Noticiero Univision network newscasts and the Latin Grammy Awards, as part of a supply agreement.

"With today's announcement, Univision's commitment to serving Hispanic audiences in the U.S. expands to Canada, as well," said Alberto Ciurana, president of programming and content for Univision Networks, in a statement.

Canada's expanding Hispanic TV audiences also receive niche channels like Mediaset Italia Canada, Sky TG24 Canada and Cinelatino.

Corus already is the local Canadian licensee for a host of other foreign networks, including HBO Canada, ABC Spark, Nickelodeon Canada and OWN: Oprah Winfrey Network Canada.
