NBC Uni appoints Cory Shields to new post

Exec will oversee intellectual property issues

NEW YORK -- NBC Universal has named Cory Shields to the newly created post of executive vp global policy strategies and alliances.

Shields will be a key player in advancing NBC Uni's work on strengthening IP protection, as well as for continuing to build alliances with other IP-intensive industries, unions and organizations.

Shields, who has served since 2006 as executive vp communications, reports to NBC Uni president and CEO Jeff Zucker and executive vp and general counsel Rick Cotton.

"The lifeblood of a media company is its intellectual property, which is why I've asked Cory to take on this crucial challenge," Zucker said.

Added Cotton: "It has become clear that we need a senior executive who can serve as our dedicated communications strategist on IP issues, playing a role in formulating policy and in advancing our position with opinion-makers, the general public, unions and other allies around the world."

Shields will remain based in New York. In his previous role, he was in charge of overall media and communications strategy and execution.

Before that, he worked at Sony BMG Music Entertainment as senior vp corporate communications. And prior to that, Shields was chief communications officer and executive vp at J. Walter Thompson after seven years at NBC, where he served in a series of communications roles.
