NBCUniversal Teams With Tom Hardy's Production Company on Two TV Shows
Hardy Son & Baker will produce crime thriller 'Pendulum' and science-fiction entry 'Trees.'
NBCUniversal International Studios is taking advantage of its first-look deal with Tom Hardy's production company, signing up for two new TV shows.
Hardy Son & Baker, set up by Hardy and partner Dean Baker, will produce Pendulum, based on the crime thriller by Adam Hamdy, and Trees, a science-fiction graphic novel series from award-winning comic book writer and New York Times best-selling author Warren Ellis and illustrator Jason Howard.
Pendulum, which is to be published in the U.S. next year by Quercus, will be adapted by author Hamdy and centers on an everyman, targeted for death by a serial killer, delving into the digital underworld.
"It was immediately clear to us that Pendulum’s narrative would appeal to audiences internationally given the book is a thrilling, high-concept ride about the nature of our digitally connected society," said Tom Coan, senior vp scripted programming at NBCUniversal International Studios. "We are thrilled to have Adam on board to adapt the book and look forward to taking the project to buyers."
Meanwhile, Trees is set 10 years after the arrival of a vast alien presence who stand on the Earth’s surface like trees and do not move or communicate. Appearing not to acknowledge human life and society, the series follows the silent pressure and strange changes they exert on global communities from China to the Arctic Circle.
“Warren is one of the top names in comics and a best-selling author who has a terrifically subversive perspective on story," said Coan. "It’s that unique sensibility that sits at the heart of Trees, where he has turned the alien invasion genre on its ear."
Hardy Son & Baker's first show, the historical drama Taboo, written by Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight and starring Hardy, is set to air on BBC in the U.K. and FX in the U.S. in early 2017.
