NBR acquires 'Nightly Business Report'
New platforms, int'l push for 30-year-old show in the worksNEW YORK -- NBR Worldwide, a private company, has acquired PBS evergreen "Nightly Business Report," the country's most-watched daily business news show.
A price tag wasn't disclosed. The deal marks the first time that a major nightly news broadcast produced for PBS and owned by one of its affiliates has been acquired by a private entity.
NBR Worldwide plans to bring the show, which has been on the air for more than 30 years, to new platforms and make an international push.
The firm will continue to work in concert with WPBT, Channel 2 in Florida, which has been the producer of the program. It will continue as the presenting station of the show, which is anchored by Susie Gharib and Tom Hudson and is watched by an estimated 500,000 viewers every night. It will also continue to be produced from Miami and New York.
"We are extremely excited about expanding the opportunities available with the program while at the same time fully preserving and maintaining the mission and tradition of education and quality news reporting that have made both 'Nightly Business Report' and PBS such a great success," said Mykalai Kontilai, chairman and CEO of NBR Worldwide.
"We will continue to produce the crisp, balanced business reporting and analysis that viewers have come to expect while taking advantage of opportunities to expand the NBR brand and build upon the public education foundation that has driven and informed the audience for the last 30 years."
The new owners of the program have some PBS chops. Kontilai has produced the educational programs that PBS stations offer to their communities, and his partner, Gary Ferrell, is a former CEO of PBS station KERA in Dallas.
The new owners will "maintain the values of 'Nightly Business Report' while bringing the broadcast to a variety of new platforms," NBR Worldwide said.
It also announced it will expand the "Nightly Business Report" brand through targeted programs and social media, explore new distribution arrangements, create licensing opportunities and launch a new companion website at NBR.com.
Distributed by PBS, "Nightly Business Report" is carried by more than 250 public stations across the country.
