'Three Billboards' banner Blueprint Pictures will produce.

Neon is plotting a narrative remake of the documentary The Painter and the Thief, with StudioCanal and Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri banner Blueprint Pictures winning the rights for the remake.

The Painter and the Thief follows a Czech artist who, desperate for answers about the theft of her two paintings, seeks out and befriends the career criminal who stole them.

Neon, which acquired the doc out of the Sundance Film Festival, will finance the development and production with StudioCanal, while Blueprint will handle development, packaging and producing.

A writer or director has yet to be attached to the project.

Blueprint and StudioCanal worked together on two upcoming features— A Boy Called Christmas, based on the best-selling children’s book by Matt Haig, and The Last Letter From Your Lover, starring Felicity Jones and Shailene Woodley.

Neon recently acquired Sundance feature The Killing of Two Lovers, setting an awards contending release, and has an upcoming slate that includes Kate Winslet-starrer Ammonite and Spencer, starring Kristin Stewart.
