Neon's Super LTD Nabs Gianfranco Rosi's 'Notturno'

Venice Film Festival

The boutique distribution division snapped up the North American rights to the Middle East documentary picked as Italy's official Oscar contender after a Venice bow.

Super LTD, Neon's boutique distribution division, has acquired the North American rights to Gianfranco Rosi’s documentary Notturno after a debut at Venice and play at the virtual Telluride, Toronto and New York film festivals.

The film, shot over three years across Lebanon, Iraq, Kurdistan and Syria, was named by Italy to represent the country in the 2021 Oscar best international feature race. Rosi's previous documentary, Fire at Sea, which looked at refugees crossing the Mediterranean to reach Europe, was nominated for what was then the best foreign-language film Oscar in 2017, but did not win.

Notturno is produced by Stemal Entertainment and 21uno Film with Rai Cinema, among other funders.

With Notturno, Super LTD is looking to repeat the success it had with Tamara Kotevska and Ljubo Stefanov’s Honeyland, which was the first nonfiction feature to land Oscar nominations for best documentary and best international feature in the same year.

Mason Speta negotiated the Notturno deal for Super LTD with Submarine Entertainment on behalf of the filmmakers.

The Match Factory is handling international rights.
