Twitter lights up as the streaming service goes out for several hours Tuesday night.

NEW YORK -- Netflix's Web site streaming service experienced an outage Tuesday night that kept users from accessing their queues and streaming content -- both via its Web site and via devices, such as Roku boxes.

The company didn't immediately detail what led to the outage, which seemed to affect users for several hours. Twitter lit up with complaints and questions about what was happening -- and "Netflix" was still a trending topic on Google Wednesday morning.

Netflix Tuesday night said via Twitter: "We are aware that the website may not work for everyone at this time. We're working to get it fixed as quickly as we can."

Several hours later, it said: "UPDATE: Streaming is back on the website. We're still working on getting streaming back to all devices. Thanks for your patience!"

In the early morning hours East Coast time, the Twitter feed added: "RESOLVED: The website and devices are back up and running. Thanks again for your patience while we worked to get this fixed!"

On Wednesday, Netflix sent an email to subscribers offering to apply a 3 percent credit to the next billing statement due to the outage.

The last known outage happened in October.
