Netflix has ordered its first Brazilian original series, a futuristic thriller titled 3%. The official announcement, made on Wednesday, stated that the show will start shooting in early 2016 and will debut later that year.

Produced by Boutique Filmes, the first season will be directed by Oscar-nominated cinematographer Cesar Charlone (City of God, Blindness), and starring João Miguel (Xingu, Estômago) and Bianca Comparato, from the hit telenovela Avenida Brasil.

Written by Pedro Aguilera and produced by Boutique Filmes, 3% is described as a dramatic futuristic story set in a world divided between progress and devastation, in which the once-in-a-lifetime chance to pass to the "better side" is through a cruel – and not always fair – process where only 3 percent of the candidates succeed.

In 2011, Boutique Films had released a 3-episode pilot on YouTube, which got more than 400,000 views. The episodes feature a dystopian and totalitarian future where young people struggle to endure, in the lines of Insurgent and Maze Runner.

"Ultimately, the series questions the dynamics of society that imposes constant selection processes we all have to go through, whether we like it or not," said Charlone.

"Partnering with one of the most innovative networks in the world is very exciting. Netflix willingness to invest in Brazilian content, local talent and creative storytelling is key for our growth as a industry," said exec producer Tiago Mello. "The story was originally created a few years ago and now I am thrilled that it will turn into a completely new original Netflix series."

"We look forward to working with such an acclaimed team for our first Netflix Original production entirely shot in Brazil," said vp independent and local content Erik Barmack. "We are confident that this fascinating premise will be widely enjoyed by our members internationally."
