Network shows see on-demand growth

Internet offerings grew 600% in the past year

BRUSSELS -- On-demand Internet offerings of network shows have grown 600% in the past year, despite a complex distribution labyrinth and fragmented monetization opportunities, according to media analysts Gartner.

Thanks to services such as Hulu (used by NBC and Fox) and (for CBS and ABC), the sector is expected to generate advertising revenue of $75 million in 2008, and grow in excess of $1.5 billion by 2012, according to a Gartner report released Tuesday.

This higher-quality sector, which connects advertisers to large Web 2.0 communities, represents 30% of all video content on the Internet and could eventually pose a major threat to TV networks and film studios, the report said.
