New Line Picks Up Buddy Action Comedy From Former Walden Exec (Exclusive)

Evan Turner

Evan Turner wrote the script for "Partners" under a pseudonym

New Line has picked up Partners, a spec by former Walden movie executive Evan Turner.

During his tenure at Walden, Turner worked on titles ranging from Hoot to the Journey to the Center Earth movies, the latter of which were co-productions with New Line. When Walden contracted and downsized to become mostly a financier several months ago, Turner found himself out of work and looking at his options.

In between meetings, Turner hit the keyboard. He worked on an episode of The Goldbergs and tackled his feature script.

With a pseudonym on its cover page, Partners was in the process of being packaged when Turner lunched with New Line execs Michael Disco and Sam Brown and told them about a script he happened to “discover.” He couldn't keep the cat in the bag for too long; before lunch was over, he admitted he wrote it.

Still, New Line liked what it saw and took it off the table. Disco and Brown will now oversee the project for the company.

New Line sparked to a buddy-cop action comedy with a fresh twist: unlike most buddy cop movies featuring a male team, a female team (think The Heat), or even a male-canine team, this one focuses on the rarely told adventures of opposite-sex partners.

The plot revolves around a hotshot LAPD detective who falls for a gorgeous woman after a one-night stand. He then discovers, to his chagrin, that she's not only an FBI agent but is also his new, no-nonsense boss on a high-profile case.

No producers are on board at this stage.

Turner, who will be an executive producer on Journey 3 and Journey 4, was repped by Trevor Engelson of Underground in the deal.
