New York Fashion Week Spring 2013: Where Are the A-Listers?
Lauren Conrad, Mandy Moore and Debra Messing are nice, but the event appears to have been drained of some serious star power by the Toronto Film Festival. Where's SJP? Gwyneth? Zoe Saldana?
It might be that the Toronto Film Festival is such a monster this year, that it sucked up all the major female stars. After all, promoting your film at one of the most major film fests in the world would seem to take precedence over sitting front row at your favorite (or not) designer's fashion show. Or - it might be that designers just don't feel like paying stars right now to show up - as we all know that's what it takes these days. Or it might be all the TV stars are shooting after a long hiatus and having Emmy anticipation. Whatever the reason, one thing is clear - there is a clear dearth of A-listers at New York Fashion Week for spring 2013. And there are only two days and a few major shows left this week.
We'd have to say, Marc Jacobs had the best turnout so far, on Monday night - but even Rachel Zoe and Brad Goreski, Hailee Steinfeld (who went to quite a few other shows), Ricky Martin, Alexa Chung, Kelly Osbourne - and the only true A-lister here, Kristen Wiig - aren't up to his usual gets, like Kim Gordon, Sofia Coppola, Gwyneth Paltrow, and even supermodels like Christy Turlington and Linda Evangelista and Naomi Campbell. What's going on?
Stacy Keibler attended the Vera Wang spring 2013 show - and you would have thought Angelina Jolie had arrived from the amount of journalists following her. Seven camera crews descended on her during her walk from backstage to her seat - she was about 35 people deep, the media followers knocking over all in their wake. "I adore fashion," she was heard to pronounce. "It's so much fun to be here, and I love what Vera Wang does . . . " Yeah, tell us something we haven't already heard before. This is someone who can use another photo opp - but those who don't need them did simply not turn up.
The Mercedes Benz Lounge on the site of Lincoln Center was where stars went first, because the luxury auto company and fashion week major title sponsor had its own people to escort stars to their seats. So Debra Messing (who went to the Project Runway fashion show), Lil Kim (Nina Skarra), Katharine McPhee (Rebecca Taylor), Sami Gayle (Rebecca Taylor) and Mariska Hargitay (Lela Rose) all turned up there for coffee or champagne and a little chill out time in comfort out of the crowds before getting barraged by camera crews. This came the closest to an A-list environment.
Perhaps the truly biggest star at show all week - this is before Wednesday and the Michael Kors and Marchesa shows - always star heavy - was Mark Ruffalo, whose wife Sunrise Ruffalo is a fan and client of the designer Maria Cornejo for Zero. "It's Mark's first fashion show," she told THR on Monday night at Pier 57, before Cornejo's terrific show of cool girl dresses and pants and jackets.
"I finally got to drag him." Meanwhile, we reminded Ruffalo of the moment he was promoting The Kids Are Alright, and for which he got an Oscar nom - but said, "The studios are still afraid of me because my films don't make money." We asked him if after starring in The Avengers his attitude has changed - slightly. "I can never say my films do not make money now," he laughed. "I have not said that in quite a while, and I'll never say it again."
