NewFronts: Refinery29 Launches Originals Banner
The editorial brand announced Tuesday that it has raised $50 million from Scripps Networks Interactive and WPP.
Fresh off news of its $50 million funding round, Refinery29 held a lavish NewFront presentation in New York to announce the launch of its originals banner.
Led by executive vp programming Amy Emmerich, R29 Originals will feature a mix of tutorials, docuseries and scripted series.
"I have a daughter, and I want her to learn to kick some ass and wear lipstick while she does it," Emmerich said onstage, adding that R29 Originals "will help her do that."
The scripted series include Her Shorts, a short-film series that tells stories of women's and men's reproductive and sexual health issues. The series will feature original work from Lena Dunham, Emily Ratajkowski, Mamie Gummer, Mae Whitman, Jack Antonoff, Jenni Konner, Richard Shepard and more.
S*!tty Boyfriends, created in partnership with Brian Grazer and Ron Howard's New Form Digital and Lisa Kudrow and Dan Bucatinsky's Is or Isn't Entertainment, will tell the story of Amanda, a single girl who turns to Internet-savvy Auntie Katie for help with her dating life.
From Jill Soloway and Rebecca Odes' wifey.tv, The Skinny is a dark comedy about a feminist comedian (Jessie Kahnweiler) in Los Angeles trying to live, love and get over her bulimia. Kahnweiler also writes and directs alongside indie veteran Illeana Douglas.
Other scripted series include Five Phases and Throwback.
On the documentary side R29 has picked up 11 series, including VR series Fashionably Bound, haute couture-focused One Look and We Are the XX with Kassidy Brown and Allison Rapson.
The tutorials genre will include series on food, gender-bending style, wardrobe hacks, pop culture and politics news bites and more.
