The film has begun principal photography in Richmond, Va.

Nick Kroll and Michael Shannon have joined the cast of the biopic Loving.

Inspired by the HBO documentary The Loving Story, the film follows interracial couple Richard and Mildred Loving, who married in 1958 and subsequently were arrested and exiled from their home state of Virginia on the grounds of the state's miscegenation statute in the Racial Integrity Act of 1924. Their marriage led to the landmark civil-rights Supreme Court case Loving v. Virginia.

Shannon will be playing the role of the Life magazine photographer who shot iconic images of the Lovings in 1965. This is the fifth collaboration between Shannon and writer-director Jeff Nichols — a work history that includes 2012's Mud.

Actors Bill CampMarton Csokas and Jon Bass are also new additions to the film, which began principal photography on location in Richmond, Va.

The Great Gatsby's Joel Edgerton will play Richard, while Agents of SHIELD actress Ruth Negga will take on the role of Mildred.

The film is being produced by The Loving Story director Nancy Buirski and actor Colin Firth.

Kroll, the Kroll Show's star-creator who is repped by WME, Mosaic and Schreck Rose, will lend his voice to the upcoming Captain Underpants movie.

Shannon is set to play Elvis Presley in the film Elvis & Nixon and will reprise his role as the villainous General Zod in Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice. He is represented by CAA, Wetzel Entertainment and Morris Yorn.

Camp is repped by Innovative Artists. Csokas is repped by WME, Anonymous Content and Morris Yorn. Bass is repped by Gersh and Authentic Talent.
