Nicole Richie's Summer Plans Include 'Downton Abbey' and Au-Naturel Hair
The style icon opened up during the celebration of her House of Harlow 1960 x Revolve Clothing collab, where she was joined by bestie Cameron Diaz as well as their hubbies (the brothers Madden).
The setting sun cast a warm orange glow across the rooftop patio of Revolve Clothing's Social Club on Thursday evening, illuminating the wooden deck — filled with succulents and orange tequila concoctions — as well as the guests gathered to celebrate the collaboration between the digital retailer and Nicole Richie's clothing and accessories label, House of Harlow 1960.
The tangerine light played perfectly into the rich, bohemian aesthetic that Richie brought to her latest collaboration with Revolve. Attendees — including the reality star turned designer's gal pals Cameron Diaz, Jessie J and WhoWhatWear's Katherine Power, as well as the hottest bloggers on the block — looked like Woodstock goddesses in drapey kimono dresses, off-the-shoulder ensembles and silk slips in shades of sienna, navy and cream.

"Music is my first inspiration, always," said Richie of the 20-piece House of Harlow 1960 x Revolve collection ($70-$268), available now. "I love Keith Richards, Marianne Faithfull, Stevie Nicks. Musicians are so expressive, and I love going to a live show and watching a real concert with costume changes and capes — I love that big, over-the-top theatrical moment." It's that '70s rock 'n' roll inspiration, which Richie has returned to season after season since launching House of Harlow 1960 accessories in 2008 (apparel launched in 2010), that has made her something of a style icon.
In anticipation of the summer season ahead, Pret-a-Reporter chatted with Richie about her warm-weather style, her go-to cocktail and why we won't be seeing her sporting purple locks anytime soon.
Pret-a-Reporter: What's your favorite go-to piece from the collection for summer?
Richie: I’m living in the slip dresses currently. I got my samples about three weeks ago, and I just have not taken them off. The weather is warm enough here that that’s kind of what I’ve been living in. That and the bodysuits.
How would you style each of those?
The bodysuit I would throw on with a pair of [Levi’s] 501s and sandals, and the slip dress — just as is. Just put some coconut oil in your hair in a little slicked-back bun and some sandals and call it a day.
What's the song of the summer?
I don’t listen to current music. … Right now — it’s not a summer song — but I love “Love on the Brain,” that Rihanna song. It’s not very summery; it’s actually kind of dark. (Laughs.)

What's your summer cocktail?
Rosé with ice.
What's your summer hair color?
I’m trying not to color my hair all summer and just let the sun do its thing. [I’m not] doing anything with my hair, actually. I’m trying to just let it be. I have naturally curly hair, so it’ll be interesting.
Which TV show are you binge-watching this summer?
I just started watching Downton Abbey and watched one season in like a week. So I’ll probably continue on.
Where’s your summer hangout?
My house. My girls come over all the time. We hang out, sit outside, swim, hang out with my kids, listen to good music.
