'Novitiate': Melissa Leo Gets Tough on 1960s Nuns (Exclusive Video)
Margaret Qualley, Dianna Agron, Morgan Saylor, Liana Liberto and Julianne Nicholson also star in the Maggie Betts drama.
Melissa Leo leaves no room for error in The Hollywood Reporter's exclusive clip of Novitiate.
The Sony Pictures Classics drama stars Margaret Qualley as a young woman who is training to become a nun but struggles with issues of faith, the changing Catholic Church and sexuality during the early 1960s and the era of Vatican II — a controversial period after which over 90,000 nuns left their orders. Leo plays the convent's stern Reverend Mother, as seen in the clip of the postulants' first day of instruction.
Julianne Nicholson, Dianna Agron, Morgan Saylor and Liana Liberto are also among the ensemble cast of the film, written and directed by Maggie Betts (her feature directorial debut).
Novitiate hits theaters Oct. 27. It screens next at the Toronto Film Festival.
