Romy Soleimani at NYFW - H 2015

The actresses' makeup artist, Romy Soleimani — who led the teams for Kate Spade and Ryan Roche on Friday — spills their secrets.

Backstage this season at New York Fashion Week, it is not all about makeup. It’s actually more about a lack of makeup. Raw but gorgeously luminous and plump skin is revealed by not covering it with a mask of foundation, like at Jason Wu, Kate Spade and Ryan Roche's shows, the latter two of which makeup artist and beauty director Romy Soleimani tended to. Bottom line: Skin care is in.

At Kate Spade, Soleimani used Wei Beauty’s “crazy sheet-masks with essences, a new milk they’re coming out with (Five Sacred Grains Rapid Glow Liquid Milk) and a pudding cream (Lotus Blossom Hydra-Lock Oil-Free Gel Cream), which were pretty decadent and nice to work with” on models. She likes pressing the products into the skin to “give it a nice, pillowy, cushiony, plump, plush base — it’s silky.”

Likewise, the prescription at Ryan Roche was a combo of Jurlique's Rosewater Balancing Mist ($35), Moisture Replenishing Day Cream ($44) and Love Balm ($10). It’s a sign of something several actresses are already on board with. “I’m a real believer in marrying skin care and cosmetics,” Soleimani tells Pret-a-Reporter. “Julianne Moore, Keira Knightley, Michelle Williams, Rachel McAdams — they’re never asking me for a heavy contour; they’re all about their skin.”

So what exactly is the ticket to their fresh, always-hydrated glows? “Michelle and Julianne are both really big Joanna Vargas advocates,” says Soleimani. Appropriate for the English rose, “Keira always loves By Terry Rose Balm ($60) and Dr. Hauschka Rose Day Cream ($43).” McAdams, too, is a fan of Dr. Hauschka products, along with other, more natural formulas — such as Badger Balm ($10). And the other go-to all of Soleimani’s girls are fond of: Caudalie Beauty Elixir ($49) spray. We’ll have what they’re having.
