"What?!?!?! Completely inhuman display of ridiculousness!!!" Kristi Yamaguchi wrote on Twitter.

Nathan Chen made a dramatic comeback Friday night during the men's free-skate program, setting an Olympic record by landing six quads in a single performance.

The 297.35 score-earning performance marked a departure from Chen's short program, where he ended in 17th place. Chen was expected to attempt five quads in his free-skate program, but added a sixth spontaneously, perhaps in an attempt to make up points from his last appearance on the ice.

The score from Chen's free-skate performance landed him in fifth place on Thursday, behind Japan's Yuzuru Hanyu, Spain's Javier Fernandez, Japan's Shoma Uno and China's Jin Boyang. Hanyu was widely expected to best his competitors on Friday.

Celebrities from the worlds of entertainment and figure skating alike cheered on Chen during his audacious performance, including Today anchor Hoda Kotb and former Olympic competitors Kristi Yamaguchi and Michelle Kwan. "What?!?!?! Completely inhuman display of ridiculousness!!! 6 quads...beautiful skating. Guys beyond," wrote Yamaguchi.
