The album sold 4 million copies in five weeks, as U.K. music acts claimed the best-selling album in the world for the sixth time in seven years.

One Direction's album Midnight Memories was the top-selling album in the world in 2013, according to global figures cited by the British Phonographic Industry (BPI).

The boy band's third studio album sold 4 million copies worldwide in the space of just five weeks following its release on Nov. 25. Eminem's The Marshall Mathers LP 2 came in second.

One Direction had a banner year in 2013 with the sellout world tour Take Me Home grossing more than $100 million and the Morgan Spurlock-directed concert film One Direction: This Is Us 3D making $67 million at the box office. The group sold a phenomenal 685,000 copies of Midnight Memories in the U.K. alone.

U.K. music has been experiencing something of a high in the last decade or so, with British acts Coldplay (twice), Adele (twice), Susan Boyle and Amy Winehouse all topping the year-end global album charts. In fact, U.K. acts have claimed the best-selling album in six of the last seven years and in seven of the last 10.

BPI's director of communications Gennaro Castaldo said: "Around one in eight albums sold around the world are by British artists, and One Direction are certainly playing their part in maintaining this fantastic achievement. It all helps to add up to a golden decade of global success for British music, and with some huge albums out later this year, not least from the likes of Coldplay in May and a rumored new release from Adele, there must be another good chance that a British artist will again top the global best-sellers list come the end of the 2014."
