Tom Ortenberg’s Open Road Films has set a Sept. 23, 2011 release date for its first film, Omnilab’s action-thriller Killer Elite.

Directed by Gary McKendry, Killer Elite stars Jason Statham, Clive Owen and Robert De Niro.

Open Road Films is a joint venture of AMC Entertainment and Regal Entertainment. Regal and AMC launched the independent distribution company earlier this year with the goal of expanding the number of movie available to them.

Based on a true story, Killer Elite follows a former special ops agent (Statham) who is lured out of retirement to rescue his mentor (De Niro). But first he must most complete a near-impossible mission and take down three assassins with a cunning leader (Owen).

Financed by Omnilab, Killer Elite was produced by Omnilab’s Australian production arm, Ambience Entertainment. Inferno Entertainment is handling worldwide sales.
