'Open Season' at The Reporter

THR launches column dedicated to awards season

The Hollywood Reporter is inaugurating its first print column devoted to the awards season.

"Open Season" is a dedicated column written by senior writer Steven Zeitchik that will focus on the ups and downs, ins and outs and highs and lows of the increasingly competitive awards season landscape, the written and unspoken rules that govern it and the strategies that companies use to turn their campaigns into winners.

"We have increasingly felt that the awards season is a fascinating window onto Hollywood's movers and shakers in the movie business," THR editor Elizabeth Guider said. "The calculations, the stratagems, the intuitions that go into mounting award season campaigns are fascinating, as are the various shifts in the race as the contenders jostle for position.

"We think Steven is the perfect writer to get behind the curtain and expose the strings that have to be pulled -- and the people who do it -- in putting on this ever-entertaining show," she said.

The column will start Oct. 28 and run Tuesdays and Fridays through November and daily from December-February.

THR also plans to introduce other innovative awards season initiatives in the weeks to come.

Zeitchik joined THR a year ago as a senior writer covering the film business out of New York and writing news analysis pieces about the entertainment biz as a whole. He will relocate to Los Angeles to focus on "Open Season."
