Oprah Winfrey Headed North as OWN Launches in Canada

Chat show queen tells ET Canada she wants to fly north to "say thank you to all our great viewers there."

TORONTO – Talk show host Oprah Winfrey is headed to Canada for the upcoming launch of her OWN network north of the border.

"I love Canada so much, that recently I said to my team that when we launch in Canada we should figure out a way I can get to Canada and say thank you to all our great viewers there,” the media maven told Entertainment Tonight Canada in an interview to air Friday night on the Global Television celebrity TV magazine series.

“So you may be seeing me in Canada,” she added.

Canadian broadcaster Corus Entertainment, the Canadian licensee for the joint venture between Winfrey’s Harpo Entertainment and Discovery Communications, has yet to confirm whether the daytime TV queen will be in Toronto on March 1 when OWN Canada will be launched into around six million homes here.

“I’ve no idea, but we’re optimistic we’ll have her up in Canada at some point,” Corus Television president Doug Murphy told The Hollywood Reporter earlier in the week (HR, Ja. 5).

Through January and February, Canadians will sample OWN shows day-and-date with the U.S. airdates ahead of the March 1 bow.
