Lionsgate Unveils 'Orange is the New Black' Slot Machines Bound for Las Vegas

Orange is the New Black - H 2015

The bet on Las Vegas gamblers is the studio's latest foray into the gaming space.

If you're headed to a Las Vegas casino in the near future, keep an eye out for the new Orange is the New Black slot machines featuring Piper and the crew that were unveiled on Tuesday.

Lionsgate and slot machine giant International Game Technology announced two casino versions of a slot machine inspired by Jenji Kohan’s prison-set show on Netflix at the 2015 Global Gaming Expo in Las Vegas. Each slot machine game offers potential multi-level awards for spinning wagers displayed on a 55” top screen, while players also experience clips, music, characters and sound bites from the prison-set drama. The machines are expected to roll out in 2016.

Lead actress Taylor Schilling’s character, Piper Kerman, is featured prominently in the slot machine games. And when players reach bonus rounds, they will encounter other Litchfield inmates via the Crazy Eyes’ Wild Feature, Alex’s More Symbols Feature and Mendoza’s Double Game Feature.

The big prize is Piper’s All Features!, which combines all characters’ bonus rounds for big player rewards. Lionsgate isn't saying which Las Vegas casinos will eventually host the Orange is the New Black slot machines.

But the move marks the studio's latest foray into the gaming space after investing in game developer and publisher Telltale Games to help help turn Lionsgate IP like The Hunger Games and Divergent into mobile and social platform games. The Orange is the New Black slot machines will also be available for playing on IGT’s social gaming mobile and desktop website, DoubleDown Casino.

"Each of the games captures the essence of this blockbuster series in unique ways that fans will appreciate, and the launch of the DoubleDown Casino social version is designed to reach the massive fan base that watches the show on desktop and mobile devices," said IGT senior vp and DoubleDown Casino general manager Joe Sigrist in a statement. Orange Is the New Black follows the adventures of prison inmate Kerman as she navigates the tricky and sometimes comical culture that is life behind bars.

"By extending Orange is the New Black into IGT slots for casinos, desktop and mobile, we’re providing millions of existing fans with fun, interactive new ways to enjoy the show while introducing its unique mix of drama, excitement and humor to a whole new audience," said Lionsgate president of interactive ventures & games Peter Levin in his own statement.
