This Is What Oscar Nominees Will Be Riding Soon
Academy Award nominees are getting chic Martone Cycling Co. bikes by Lorenzo Martone, Marc Jacobs' ex, in their gift bags Sunday.
Being an Oscar nominee carries serious perks beyond simply being honored, the gift bag being perhaps the most significant. Among this year’s swag? An all-gold bicycle by Martone Cycling Co., designed by Marc Jacobs' ex-boyfriend Lorenzo Martone. Technically the bike isn’t in the bag.
"This Sunday the nominees will receive a little box with a red chain bracelet inside — our trademark — and a voucher for their gift," says Martone, who adds that nominees will be able to select from other colors of the super chic Gramercy and Grand cycles as well, from gray and black to silver, red and orange.
One reason the bicoastal West Hollywood and NYC resident’s two-wheelers were sought for the gift bag is their fashion-forward look. "We as a company have been very involved in fashion and design, so naturally Hollywood and the Oscars is the next step for us — Martone Cycling is bridging industries that didn’t talk before," he tells Pret-a-Reporter. Indeed, the first media coverage Martone received upon launching in 2013 was in American Vogue. "Last December I designed an all-gold bike and someone from L.A. who curates the product for the gift bags called our office last-minute asking if she could get her hands on some for the nominees. I said yes!"
The well-curated bag is worth an estimated $150,000, says Martone. "I heard Audi is involved, and hotels, airlines and beauty brands. It’s pretty spectacular — a mix of product and experiences. It’s beyond my imagination."
Also pretty mind-blowing for the designer: the talent who will soon be atop his bikes. "2015 could not be better, they are all so talented," says Martone, who is most excited to see Emma Stone, Julianne Moore, Meryl Streep, Bradley Cooper, Steve Carell and Benedict Cumberbatch perched on new rides. "All of them are on my radar though; I can’t wait to see them on Martone bikes helping me to create a whole movement of wellness and style by biking in Los Angeles."
