Oscar winners set for Eurovision Summit

BRUSSELS -- Oscar winners Istvan Szabo, Ennio Morricone and Jean-Claude Carriere will be among 500 film and broadcasting figures attending the May 3-5 Eurovision Summit in Lucerne, Switzerland.

The gathering, hosted by the European Broadcasting Union, will bring together top executives from public service television as well as government ministers, producers and other media decision makers.

Other personalities due at the summit include Emmy-winning Danish producer Peter Thorsboe, veteran entertainment executive Rick Senat and Illuminations Television head John Wyver.

The three-day event, less than a fortnight before the Festival de Cannes, will showcase upcoming programs for buyers and include debates on key broadcasting issues. The summit also will include the EBU's TV assembly to decide on upcoming co-productions and agree on strategy for the three years ahead.

The EBU, created in 1950, is the world's largest industry organization of public broadcasters. It is popularly associated with the Eurovision Song Contest, which it organizes, but the EBU also plays an important role in the exchange of news and sports material. The EBU's 74 members and 44 associate members include countries in Africa and the Middle East as well as U.S. media giants ABC, CBS, NBC and Time Warner.
