'Guardians of the Galaxy' and 'Dawn of the Planet of the Apes' among the movies that made the cut

Guardians of the Galaxy will face off against Dawn of the Planet of the Apes in this year's contest for the best visual effects Oscar. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences today released the titles of the ten films that have made the shortlist and now will all contend for a nomination.

The list also includes Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Godzilla, The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies, Interstellar, Maleficent, Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb, Transformers: Age of Extinction and X-Men: Days of Future Past.

The shortlist was selected by the Academy’s Visual Effects Branch Executive Committee. All members of the Visual Effects Branch will view 10-minute excerpts from each of the shortlisted films on Jan. 10. Following the screenings, the members will vote to nominate five films for final Oscar consideration. The 87th Academy Awards nominations will be announced Jan. 15.
