Oscars 2015: Unique Ponytails Speak Volumes on the Red Carpet

Lady Gaga and Dakota Johnson make the case for new takes on a traditional ‘do.

There are no rules for red-carpet hair, but when it comes to the Oscars, glamour is a given. From swept-up dos to slicked-back strands, this year’s Academy Awards saw classic hairstyles reinterpreted—and ponytails were no exception.

Fifty Shades of Grey star Dakota Johnson was on trend with this season’s textured hair look, pulled back in what hairstylist Mark Townsend described as a “young, cool” ponytail and worn with choppy bangs framing her face.

Jennifer Lopez went for a more polished take of the look with a sleek pony that focused the attention on her fairytale Elie Saab couture gown.

And in true Lady Gaga fashion, the evening’s performer took the look to the next level with hair as architectural as her beaded Azzedine Alaia gown. With her flaxen locks parted down the middle, the Mother Monster wore a low-slung pony in a loop that was wrapped with hair strands to secure it in place. Gaga accessorized the style with red hair jewelry to match her quirky gloves.
