Alejandro G. Inarritu Oscars - H 2015

The awards are being handed out Sunday night in Hollywood.

Alejandro G. Inarritu took home the Academy Award for best director on Sunday night.

Ben Affleck presented the award to the Birdman director, who beat out Bennett Miller, Morten Tyldum, Richard Linklater and Wes Anderson to take home the Oscar.

Inarritu began his acceptance speech by claiming that "good luck charms" really do work, before revealing that he was currently donning Michael Keaton's tighty whities from the Birdman film -- his own good luck charm for the night. "They are tight and smell like balls," he joked at the podium.

At last year's awards show, Alfonso Cuaron took home the honor for his work on Gravity

Neil Patrick Harris is hosting the 87th annual Academy Awards, which is being broadcast live on ABC from the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood.
