These Stars’ Fresh-Cut Bobs Win the Oscars
Nominees Margot Robbie, Greta Gerwig and Saoirse Ronan all rocked new ‘dos on Sunday, in some cases dictated by their dresses.
It’s a given that A-listers pull out all the stops for the Academy Awards — gorgeous custom gowns, weeks of facials and hours of tedious prep the day of — but a few women went above and beyond the glamorous call of duty at Sunday night’s Oscars. A trio of nominees actually got fresh haircuts just for the occasion, showing off makeovers that changed their looks dramatically overnight.
At the Independent Spirit Awards on Saturday, I, Tonya’s Margot Robbie looked radiant with her hair dusting her collarbones, but by her first step on the red carpet Sunday, the actress’ blonde locks were hitting just beneath her jawline. “Her dress was extremely feminine and elegant, and we wanted to take the length of her hair up to make sure that it felt very classic and modern to go with her gorgeous dress,” says Moroccanoil celebrity hairstylist Bryce Scarlett, who finished the new blunt bob with an S-curve body wave using the Moroccanoil Professional Titanium Ceramic Iron.
Greta Gerwig’s hair was already quite cropped, but still, her mane man, TRESemmé celebrity hairstylist John D., took the female filmmaker — only the fifth ever to be nominated for the best director Oscar — a fair bit shorter for her big moment on Sunday. The Lady Bird helmer paired her short, ear-grazing bob in a subtle finger wave with a marigold Rodarte gown the sister duo created for her.
Perhaps the most dramatic change was seen on Lady Bird star Saoirse Ronan, whose Spirit Awards triple-banded ponytail by hairstylist Adir Abergel was completely chopped off before appearing on the red carpet. “It was ultimately the dress that made us go for the shorter cut — we had been debating a major chop, and once we saw the gown, we knew we had to go for it,” says Abergel, who has worked with the actress on “so many different looks” over the last two years.
“Saoirse is a true collaborator,” he says, “always willing to change and morph.” He describes her new ‘do as minimalist and chic, adding that the “choppy, linear bob,” styled with ghd tools, perfectly complements the contemporary, feminine feel of her gown. For all three women, their fuss-free, chopped haircuts seem perfect for this moment in time. Says Abergel, “The modern bob is young, cool and timeless. It’s always in style.”
