Mads Mikkelsen stars in the crowd-pleasing dramedy from director Thomas Vinterberg.

Denmark has selected Thomas Vinterberg's Another Round, starring Mads Mikkelsen, to represent the country at next year's Oscar race in the international feature film category.

Mikkelsen stars alongside Thomas Bo Larsen, Lars Ranthe, and Magnus Millang as four high school teachers stuck in a midlife funk who decide to embark on a drinking experiment. Inspired by a philosopher who claims humans were born with too little booze in their blood, the four begin to day drink with a purpose: to maintain a constant blood alcohol level of at least 0.5 percent.

Another Round was a crowd-pleaser at the Toronto and San Sebastian Film Festivals and was picked by Cannes for its official 2020 selection. It has become a major hit in Denmark, selling close to 750,000 tickets to date.

The film is also a frontrunner for the 2020 European Film Awards, with nominations for best film, best director, best screenplay, and best actor for Mikkelsen.

"The way the film has been received locally and abroad gives me a feeling of great gratitude," Vinterberg said in a statement.

Samuel Goldwyn has Another Round for the U.S.. Sales group TrustNordisk, whose roster also includes Sweden's Oscar hopeful Charter by Amanda Kernell, and Norway's official Oscar selection Hope by director Maria Sodahl, has nearly sold out Another Round worldwide.

The nominations for the 93rd Academy Awards will be announced on March 13, 2021. The winners' ceremony will take place at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood on April 25, 2021.
