Oscars: Jimmy Kimmel Gives Away Jet Ski to Winner With Shortest Acceptance Speech

'Phantom Thread' costume designer Mark Bridges took the special prize.

According to Oscars host Jimmy Kimmel, the first-ever Academy Awards only lasted 15 minutes, “and everyone still complained.”

To honor those super short awards and to make for a smoother night on Sunday at the 90th annual Academy Awards, Kimmel announced a new contest he was running: The winner who gives the shortest acceptance speech would win a brand-new jet ski. The catch though? If there’s a tie, nominee Christopher Plummer would win the prize.

Throughout the night, Kimmel reminded audiences about the contest. After Sam Rockwell’s acceptance of best supporting actor for Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, Kimmel announced that one-minute and 29 seconds was the current time to beat.

After the final award, Kimmel closed the show by announcing Phantom Thread costume designer Mark Bridges had the shortest speech and would be taking home the jet ski, or the Oscar for the shortest acceptance speech.
