OWN to Get Programming Block in South Africa
Pay TV provider DStv will air such shows as "Oprah’s Next Chapter" Thursdays and Sundays on Discovery International's TLC Entertainment network.
OWN: Oprah Winfrey Network, the joint venture channel of Winfrey and Discovery Communications, said Friday that it would launch an OWN programming block in South Africa.
Slated to launch on Oct. 17, the block will be available to subscribers of pay TV provider DStv on Discovery International's TLC Entertainment network. TLC is using that new name in South Africa and 40 sub-Saharan markets.
The OWN block will come in two weekly installments. "My OWN Thursday" will offer such OWN primetime hits as Oprah’s Next Chapter and Oprah's Master Class. And "Super Soul Sunday" will present "a timely, thought-provoking and inspiring block of programming designed to help viewers awaken to their best selves and discover a deeper connection to the world around them," the company said.
An OWN programming block is already available to viewers in the U.K. and Central and Eastern Europe on TLC and in Australia on Discovery Home & Health.
“Oprah couldn’t be more proud and honored to share her new television programs with South Africa,” said Erik Logan, president of OWN. “This is an exciting milestone moment in our continued international expansion.”
“Oprah is truly a beloved figure around the world, but no more so than in South Africa,” said Luis Silberwasser, executive vp and chief content officer at Discovery International. “This key market has a proven appetite for OWN’s inspirational, entertaining and provocative programming.”
