Consumers will be able to watch 'Paranormal Activity' and 'Scout's Guide' in their own homes far earlier than the traditional three-month theatrical window.

Paramount Pictures on Tuesday set digital release dates for the first movie titles in a digital revenue-sharing initiative with major exhibitors.

The two low-budget fall titles — Scout's Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse (Oct. 30) and Paranormal Activity: The Ghost Dimension (Oct. 23) — will be released for home entertainment on Dec. 8 and Dec. 15, respectively. That makes the titles available digitally 17 days after they were all but done with their theatrical run in major circuits.

AMC Theatres and Canada's Cineplex Entertainment were the first major chains to sign up for Paramount's maverick distribution plan. Consumers will be able to watch Paranormal Activity and Scout's Guide in their own homes far earlier than the traditional three-month theatrical window.

Genre titles like Paranormal Activity and Scout's Guide tend to have a short theatrical shelf life than Hollywood tentpole pics, and yet are still bound by the 90-day window. "This innovative agreement with exhibitors enables us to make these two films available to home viewers much earlier than usual, following their natural lifecycle in theaters,” Megan Colligan, president of worldwide distribution and marketing for Paramount, said in a statement.

"This flexible distribution model allows us to maximize the revenue potential of these films, satisfy consumer demand through legitimate digital access, while respecting and preserving an exclusive theatrical window," she added. Other major exhibitors participating in the flexible distribution strategy for the low-budget titles include National Amusements, Alamo Drafthouse Cinema, Southern Theatres and Landmark Cinemas.

The participating chains will each receive a percentage of the studio’s digital revenue through 90 days from the initial North American theatrical release. Each exhibitor’s slice will be proportional to the theatrical gross market share, said Paramount.
