Park stepping down from Asian Film Market
EmptySEOUL -- Park Kwang-su is poised to step down from his position as director of the Asian Film Market, organizers said Wednesday.
Park has led the market since its founding in 2006. It is held alongside the Pusan International Film Festival, the largest movie festival in Asia.
A spokesman said there was no pressing reason for Park's departure and that he originally planned to lead the market for only a couple of years, adding that Park wanted to make time for his own film projects. No replacement was announced.
The Asian Film Market grew out of a collection of long-held industry related events at PIFF, including the Pusan Promotion Plan and the Busan International Film Commission and Industry Showcase.
More than 1,600 registered participants from 160 film companies attended the most recent market in October.
Park will continue to serve as director of the Busan Film Commission, the local filmmaking support organization he helped to found in 1999. He also is a successful filmmaker, having directed many award-winning movies since 1988, including "To the Starry Island" and "A Single Spark."
