Pathe, BSkyB releasing comedy-horror 'Cottage'
Launching film on DVD, VOD, pay-per-viewLONDON -- As on-demand services continue to attract consumers, Pathe Films and BSkyB said Tuesday that they will jointly release the British comedy-horror film "The Cottage" on DVD and Sky's online VOD service Sky Player beginning July 14.
The joint PPV/DVD release will be available for a four-month window and will be available to BSkyB's 8.8 million customers for 3.99 pounds ($7.90).
BSkyB, which this year jointly launched "Vegas Baby" with Momentum on DVD and PPV, said it will look at compressing windows for relevant titles.
"This deal with Pathe is another move in the right direction," said Ian Lewis, director of Sky Movies and Sky Box Office. "This can only be great news for our customers, who are increasingly able to see titles like 'The Cottage' much closer to their theatrical release."
Pathe U.K. managing director Cameron McCracken said the on-demand market is driving demand.
"Testing the waters with a day-and-date DVD/PPV/VOD release for a mainstream title like 'The Cottage' will hopefully enable us to draw the conclusion that the narrowing of windows can enhance rather than undermine commercial returns," McCracken said.
