Joining 'Mad Men' producer Tom Smuts and 'Breaking Away' star Dennis Christopher, the actor known as McDreamy celebrates Ride to Work Month on an hourlong bike commute with the staff of The Hollywood Reporter.

Patrick Dempsey, best known for his long starring role on Grey's Anatomy, joined the staff of The Hollywood Reporter on Friday to celebrate National Ride to Work Month on a leisurely nine-mile ride from Santa Monica to THR's office in Los Angeles.

Also participating in the ride were Dennis Christopher, who starred in the legendary cycling film Breaking Away, as well as Tom Smuts, an Emmy-nominated writer and producer known for his work on Mad Men

The ride began at Helen's Cycles in Santa Monica, a high-end bike shop that's a favorite of many industry cyclists (Harrison Ford, Dennis Quaid and Steve Martin are customers). The route followed the brand-new Expo bike path, which traces the just-opened rail line of the Metro's Expo extension, stretching train service to Santa Monica for the first time in decades.

The ride continued toward Los Angeles, passing through the leafy Cheviot Hills neighborhood and then along a wide bike lane on Venice Blvd. Nearly all of the ride was on bike lanes and bike paths, highlighting some of the safe cycling infrastructure that L.A. has to offer for people interested in riding to work or for leisure.

Dempsey, Christopher and Smuts all are passionate cyclists who ride in their daily lives. Dempsey talked about how he often rides to meetings and lunch dates in Venice and Santa Monica, while Smuts has long biked to work on a daily basis. Christopher told stories about how for many years he rode the classic Masi racing bike that he used in Breaking Away all around Los Angeles, and eventually had it refurbished so he could hang the historic bicycle in his Los Angeles home.

The ride concluded at THR's Los Angeles office, where participants drank smoothies and ate granola with slightly more abandon than usual.
