Penelope Cruz, Margot Robbie and Blake Lively Attend Chanel's Egyptian Extravaganza in NYC
Hollywood VIPs flocked to the Metropolitan Museum of Art for Karl Lagerfeld’s latest Metiers d'Art show. “It was really beautiful,” says Marion Cotillard.
Karl Lagerfeld staged Chanel’s 2018 Metiers d’Art show Tuesday night at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. The star-studded event, which included brand ambassadors Margot Robbie, Penelope Cruz and Pharrell Williams (who walked the runway), was inspired by ancient Egyptian culture and rich with metallic flecked tweeds, golden knee-high boots, hieroglyphic motifs and pyramid clutches.
Guests mingled and sipped champagne on arrival before being ushered through the museum’s Egyptian wing, into the Temple of Dendur where the show took place. Other VIPs included Julianne Moore, Blake Lively, Jerry and Jessica Seinfeld, Diane Kruger, Sofia Coppola, Janelle Monae and Marion Cotillard. “I thought the show was bold, amazing and really beautiful,” Cotillard told The Hollywood Reporter. “The way he [Karl] turns art into street art is really amazing.”
Lagerfeld’s gilded show — with spectacularly kaleidoscopic statement necklaces and beaded collars worthy of King Tut — marks the fashion house’s 18th special tribute to the ateliers that supply everything from lace and buttons to feathers and flowers for the luxury brand. It also marks the third time that Chanel has presented a collection in NYC (along with 2005’s Metiers d’Art at the 57th Street boutique and 2007’s cruise show at Grand Central Terminal).
In addition to jaw-dropping jewels, a major takeaway was the abundance of glittering evening looks, whether black, multicolor or white-and-gold, heading into awards season. “I especially loved the two white dresses with the Egyptian-motif collar necklaces. I also liked the multicolor leather ombre outfits…and the jewelry was just off the hook,” said Kristen Stewart’s stylist Tara Swennen. THR power stylists Leslie Fremar (Moore and Charlize Theron), Cristina Ehrlich (Cruz) and Micaela Erlanger (Kruger and Lupita Nyong’o) were also present and taking notes.
Post-show, guests were shuttled via party buses to Rumsey Playfield in Central Park where Lagerfeld had installed a pop-up “CC’s Diner” complete with hamburgers, French fries and spiked Shirley Temples on demand.
