Perlmutter ascends at NFB

TORONTO -- The Canadian government on Thursday promoted Tom Perlmutter to government film commissioner and chairman of the National Film Board of Canada.

Perlmutter, who joined Canada's public filmmaker in 2001 as director general of English programming after a career as a filmmaker and producer, replaces the outgoing Jacques Bensimon as head of the NFB.

The NFB has earned 12 Academy Awards from 69 nominations for its documentary, animation and feature film output.

Perlmutter will take on his new position June 11.
