Bevacqua, who had been president of the NBC Sports Group, will become only the third chairman in its history, following Mark Lazarus and Dick Ebersol.

NBCUniversal has named Pete Bevacqua chairman of NBC Sports Group, the company said Thursday. Bevacqua, who had been president of the NBC Sports Group, will become only the third chairman in its history, following Mark Lazarus and Dick Ebersol.

Bevacqua will continue to report to Lazarus, who was elevated to chairman of NBCUniversal television and streaming earlier this year.

Since taking over NBCU's sports division Bevacqua secured new deals with the U.S. Golf Association for the U.S. Open, as well as a nine-year extension with the PGA Tour. NBC Sports also struck a deal with the NFL to add a Sunday night wild card playoff game to its schedule, beginning in 2021. The networks, including NBC, are currently in talks with the NFL for an extension of their main NFL TV rights.

“In his time with NBC Sports, Pete has been exceptional working with our league and organizational partners, as well as in collaboration with other NBCUniversal leaders to strengthen our sports production and overall business in a challenging environment,” Lazarus said in a statement.

Before joining NBC Sports in 2018, Bevacqua was CEO of the PGA of America, and global head of golf at CAA.
