Peter Bazalgette named Royal TV Society president

BSkyB's Mike Darcey elected chair of board of trustees

LONDON -- Former Endemol chief creative officer and Sony Television executive Peter Bazalgette has been named the new Royal Television Society president, organizers said Wednesday.

BSkyB chief operating officer Mike Darcey has been elected chair of the board of trustees. Both posts were previously held by Bob Phillis, who died last year.

The Royal Television Society is the U.K. TV business' uber-elite broadcasting industry organization, gathering policy makers, politicians and executives annually for its debate-setting keynote conference, which this year will see HBO chief Jeff Bewkes address a British audience for the first time.

The RTS also hosts a raft of regional broadcasting events and an annual program awards ceremony.

Commenting on his appointment Bazalgette said he was excited about taking the post at a time when television companies were redefining their scope and purpose. "I'm confident the RTS will continue to lead the debate on the key issues and welcome in many new players," he said.

Since leaving Endemol three years ago, Bazalgette has been a media consultant specializing in television and digital entertainment. He is non-executive chairman of Sony Pictures Television's U.K. production business and an advisor to Sony Music U.K. He is also non-executive director of digital content portal MyVideoRights and independent production house Nutopia, launched last year by former BBC and Discovery exec Jane Root.
