PGA honoring game wiz Wright

The Producers Guild of America will honor video game designer Will Wright with its 2007 Vanguard Award.

Wright will be feted Jan. 20 at the PGA's annual awards gala at the Hyatt Regency Century Plaza in Century City.

The Vanguard Award annually recognizes outstanding achievement in new media and technology. Wright is the producer of such games as "SimCity" and "The Sims."

"Will Wright is the icon of the gaming industry and one of the great producers of entertainment content," PGA Awards co-chairmen Mark Gordon and Hawk Koch said in a statement. "His creations have transcended into feature films and continue to entertain a global audience. We are proud to have him be the first Vanguard recipient from the gaming universe."

Said Wright: "The PGA is signaling that games are an integral part of the entertainment industry and an art form worthy of recognition."

Previous recipients of the Vanguard Award include George Lucas, James Cameron and Pixar Animation.
