Universal has picked up the untitled film that focuses on a Cuban-American woman forced to return to her overbearing family for a baptism, a quinceañera, a wedding and a funeral.

Phil Lord and Chris Miller have teamed up with actors-turned-writers Natalie Morales and Cyrina Fiallo for a Miami-set comedy.

Universal has picked up an untitled project pitch from Morales and Fiallo, who will now write the screenplay and executive produce. Lord and Miller will produce.

The story centers on a Cuban-American woman forced to return to her overbearing family in Miami for a baptism, a quinceañera, a wedding and a funeral.

The setting harkens back to tones of My Big Fat Greek Wedding, the comedy blockbuster that tackled universal themes of family via a particular cultural lens.

The project strikes a home chord with several of the participants. Lord, hails from Miami and is of Cuban descent while Morales and Fiallo are also from that neck of the woods and also have Cuban heritage.

Producing alongside Lord and Miller will be Lord Miller’s president of film, Aditya Sood. Will Allegra from Lord Miller and Vincent Nastri of Bleecker Street Entertainment will serve as executive producers as well.

Lord Miller has a first-look deal with the studio and has been consistently setting up projects since arriving mid-2019.

Senior executive vp of production Erik Baiers will oversee the production on behalf of Universal.

Morales did stints on Netflix’s Dead to Me and Santa Clarita Diet as well as Parks and Recreation. She voiced a character in Spider-Man: Into the Multi-Verse, which was produced by Lord and Miller.

Fiallo has appeared in numerous comedy shows, ranging from Brooklyn Nine-Nine to Barry.

Morales is repped by CAA, Bleecker Street, and Goodman, Genow. Fiallo is repped by Haven Entertainment and Goodman Genow.
