'Philanthropist' pilot lands a director

Peter Horton will also exec produce the drama

Peter Horton has been tapped to direct and executive produce the pilot for NBC's upcoming drama series "The Philanthropist."

"Philanthropist," from Universal Media Studios, centers on a renegade billionaire who uses his wealth, connections and power to help people in need no matter the risks or costs.

In addition to directing, Horton will executive produce alongside showrunner David Eick and Charlie Corwin.

The project is going through a retooling following the recent recruitment of Eick. He replaced original writer-executive producer Tom Fontana who -- along with producing partner Barry Levinson, also as exec producer on the project -- departed in April over creative differences with the network.

Horton has directed the pilots for such series as ABC's "Grey's Anatomy," on which he also served as exec producer, and "Dirty Sexy Money."

He repped by WMA and attorney Tom Hoberman.
