“When I was 13 I had to go to bar mitzvahs every weekend, and this is the same feeling; I have to put on a suit to go meet with a lot of Jews” joked Jesse Eisenberg, who is nominated in the Best Actor category for The Social Network.
Melissa Leo, up for best supporting actress for her role in The Fighter, joked at the luncheon that excitement over the Oscars is like a nonstop energy drink.
And 127 Hours Best Actor nominee James Franco (who will cohost the show with Anne Hathaway) provided a preview of what to expect: “I think there’s a little bit of the old, a little bit of the new. It was funny to me when the announcement was made about Anne and me hosting because the reaction was, ‘Oh, an obvious ploy by the Academy to bring in younger viewers.’ And it was like, ‘yeah, duh!’ Is that a bad thing? How is that criticism?”
And why was Best Supporting Actor Fighter nominee Christian Bale M.I.A.? He was in China shooting a film about the 1937 massacre of Chinese citizens by Japanese troops.
