Photo exhibit framed for Dubai fest

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates -- The Dubai International Film Festival this year features not only motion pictures, but also a prestigious exhibition of still photography by the acclaimed photographic cooperative Magnum Photos.

The exhibition, titled "The Magic of Cinema," is an adaptation of the Magnum Cinema show that has traveled around the world during the past 10 years. "There are 81 photographs by 40 photographers on the theme of cinema," said Shirlene Noordin, who worked on putting together the exhibition.

The exhibition includes photos of such screen legends as Brigitte Bardot and Marilyn Monroe in the "The Seven Year Itch." It also features Dennis Stock's famous 1955 shot of James Dean hunched in his black overcoat walking through the rain, cigarette in mouth, in Times Square. "They are very iconic images," Noordin said. "There are also pictures of the filming process, like a shot from the first 'Superman' film."

The are two shots of veteran Egyptian filmmaker Youssef Chahine, who received a Lifetime Achievement Award at the fest. There also are shots of Iranian directors and actors as well as Bollywood stars.

Magnum member and prominent Iranian photojournalist Abbas is here for the exhibition and gave a talk about his work Wednesday.

The show is in a tent at the Dubai Media City and is open from noon-10 p.m. daily except Sunday, when it closes at 5 p.m. Admission is free of charge.
