'Pirates' tops $500 million at overseas boxoffice

"Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End" topped $500 million at the overseas boxoffice Tuesday, achieving that goal in just 20 days, which international distributor Buena Vista International hailed as the fastest that mark has been reached.

Now the 15th highest-grossing international film in history, the third installment of the Disney-Jerry Bruckheimer franchise climbed to new heights as China, the film's final major global opening, delivered $1.3 million from 506 screens Tuesday in one of the widest debuts in that country.

Now playing on 17,500 screens in 104 territories, "At World's End" has led the international market for three weeks in a row.

"Our next milestone is to get to $600 million," BVI president Anthony Marcoly said. "We're looking forward to a long, continuous run."
