Pokemon Go Breaks Apple Download Record
In its second week on the market, the app also reached a larger audience than Snapchat or Instagram.
It's been two weeks since Pokemon Go became an overnight phenomenon but the fad doesn't appear to be fading.
Apple confirmed Friday morning that the augmented reality app — in which users must catch Pokemon by exploring their surroundings — broke an App Store record with more downloads in its first week than any other app in the history of the store.
The company released a statement about the success of the game. "Demand for apps has never been stronger and Pokemon Go is a great example of how quickly innovative apps can become successful," reads part of the statement.
The game, from Nintendo, Pokemon Co. and Niantic Labs, was released on July 6 and quickly captured the attention of American children and adults, alike. Nintendo has yet to reveal how many downloads the free app has received during its first two-and-a-half weeks on the market, but more and more information about its performance is becoming available.
According to Symphony Advanced Media — a tech company that uses audio recognition to determine usage of apps and viewership of programming via streaming services like Netflix — Pokemon Go reached more people in the 18-34 demo during its second week of availability than Snapchat, Instagram and Twitter. It came in third among third-party apps in usage for the week of July 11 through July 17, behind only Facebook and YouTube.
Further, one in four adults 18 and over have played the game, according to Symphony. And people are spending more than 100 minutes daily on the app, much more time than they are spending on Facebook, Candy Crush, Snapchat and others.
YouTube has also seen a rise in interest of Pokemon Go-related content since the app's launch. The Google-owned streamer says Pokemon Go videos have accumulated "millions of hours of watchtime." Already it is consistently one of the top three games on YouTube behind Minecraft and Grand Theft Auto V.
